School Philosophy and Mission
The Unity Council's Child Development Programs provide a relationship-based multilingual and multicultural curriculum designed to meet each child's full potential.
The parent involvement component provides extensive training and shared governance to prepare parents to advocate for their own children, family, and community as a whole.
Comprehensive Services are provided by content area specialists and through extensive connections to community resources. This inclusive model of service delivery and collaboration within the community strengthens children, families, and the communities in which they live.
Three programs are available to meet the needs of the families:
1)Home-based services provide home visits and socialization experiences to pregnant mothers, newborns, and preschoolers.
2) Home visits and social gatherings for pregnant women, newborns, preschoolers and their families build strong relationships between staff and families, and build a sense of community.
3) Center-based half-day programs are provided to the majority of the children and their families.
The Head Start Centers are open September through June, and Early Head Start remains open through the first week of August.
Full-day childcare is available at two Early Head Start locations for families with childcare subsidies. All programs offer educational and child development services, health and nutrition education, and advocacy, social services and assistance with community resources.
The programs are located in the following four sites:
Fruitvale Head Start, 1900 Fruitvale Avenue, Suite 1C, Oakland, CA 94601
De Colores Head Start and Early Head Start, 1155 35th Avenue, Oakland, CA 94601
