Top Five Ways to Cool Off, Even If the Water Is Just a Glass in Your Hand

For all of our dreaming about sailing the open seas or snorkeling through tropical reefs or jumping in the nearest waterhole, lake, ocean or pool (or sprinkler!), we Savvy parents can also make do with what's right at hand.

Summer is the time for slaking your rest-of-the-year thirst with a splash of cool, cool water -- however you can find it!  Consider, perhaps, these opportunities for cooling off, Savvy parent-style:

  1. Lemonade ice cubes in a tall glass of iced tea (a.k.a. the plan ahead Arnold Palmer)
  2. Insisting on your own spot at the kiddie pool.  Popping your toes into the shallow part and leaving yourself there as if that water were cement -- now that's how to get some relaxation into a summer day!
  3. Sprinklers, whether in a city park or your neighbor's backyard
  4. Soaking a washcloth in water and popping it in the freezer for 30 minutes, then wearing it across your forehead.  Calling out "Calgon, take me away!" is optional, but encouraged.
  5. Slipping a small piece of ice down the back of your little one's shirt.  The laughs and the shrieks and the mock outrage will so delight you that you'll forget all about how hot it is....

Hearing the ice cream truck bells on your street and racing to find change, it drops the themometer 10 degrees just hearing the tunes!
