ages 4-6
Supplies
Laminated map and a Vis a Vis pen; or crayons and a paper map

When traveling on a long car trip, give your kids a laminated map of the US and, using a Vis a Vis pen, have them trace the map route along with you. You can also have a separate map where your child can color in the states you have been to.

Some additional activities related to this concept would be to talk about what makes each state unique. You could talk about landmarks in the state, the state flower or song, talk about people you know who live there, point out which states border other states, etc.

I like this idea for teaching geography, and I'd never heard of a Vis a Vis pen. If anyone else is wondering what it is, I looked it up online and it is a wipe off marker.
