Indoor Jump Rope

Activity Detail
Here's a clever way to re-purpose your jump rope or even a long piece of yarn. Stretch your jump rope, or other long string, on the floor and use it as a "tightrope"; your child can walk backwards, forwards, eyes closed, etc. For an added "circus" touch, give your child a broomstick to use as a balance. You could also use the jump rope as an obstacle, having your child jump over the rope forwards, sideways, with two feet, with one foot, etc. This is also fun with the garden hose in the backyard.

A simple idea, but the possibilities are endless! Use the rope to make a circle and then have your child practice inside-outside, and right-left by placing different feet and/or hands in and out.

Even though it is simple, this activity has so many advantages! Don't forget the beanbags if you want to challenge older kids. They can balance bags on head or shoulders, or carry one in each hand as they move along the rope. You can also try and crosswalk, where both feet are on one side of the rope and you cross the outside leg over the rope and try not to touch it. Repeat with the other outside leg. This is great for crossing the midline with the legs, strenghtening the connections between left and right brain.
