Plastic bag, clear glass jars or small bowls, nature!
Activity Detail
Children love to collect various items on an outdoor walk. Next time you go on a walk with your child, bring a bag with you. As your child collects leaves, acorns, and rocks, put them into your bag. When you arrive home, you and your child can sort and count the different outdoor 'souvenirs.' To begin a nature collection, give each different type of thing its own jar or bowl that your child can add to on future walks.

I love doing these kinds of simple activities with my kids because it leaves room for the kids to set the pace and help decide how far we go with it. If my kids are really into it, we collect a bunch, talk about the items, etc. If they're not into that day, they wear the basket as a hat or make it part of some other pretend game they want to play along the way and we just enjoy the walk.

You can also stick some of the nature objects into a block of green florist foam.

Don't forget to collect things from your vacations as well. My daughter loves to look through her nature box treasures, especially the sea shells that we found on our first trip to the beach.

This is a great vacation-memory activity, too. You can collect shells from your trip at the beach or rocks from your camping trip, and then put each collection in its own labeled jar.
